Can You Get a Solar Power Rebate?
A solar power rebate is a form of subsidy from either the state or federal government that is used to stimulate the
construction of solar power residential systems and small-scale grids. These solar power rebate initiatives can work in a
number of different ways.
One way involves contacting a state agency (often the department of energy, department of environmental protection, or state
house) and asking them if they currently have any grant, loan, or rebate programs for someone looking to build a residential or commercial solar
power system.
In many cases, you might find that they will offer you a solar power rebate called a “buy down.” A buy down usually means that
they will subsidize at least part of the costs of the system and the installation, lowering your total costs.
Another type of solar rebate you might be eligible for is a tax rebate. In the 1970s, the Federal government used to offer a
50% tax rebate on all forms of residential power systems that relied on alternative energy, including solar power. This did not last long, as
many people exploited the program by purchasing forms of alternative energy systems that weren't clean or safe just to get a tax rebate. Rather
than fixing the program, they canceled it. New programs have since taken the place of the initiative, but they are considerably less ambitious –
and are usually implemented by state governments.
Before you begin building you residential solar power system, you should first contact all of the local agencies that can
potentially help you get a solar power rebate. You might want to start with the highest in the chain of order (probably the state house) and then
move down from there.
