The Laurel Wreath and it’s Rich, Ancient
History
The laurel
wreath has a very interesting history that most people are not
aware of. This article will give tell you how the laurel wreath got
it's name and how it has been used throughout.
A laurel wreath can come into shapes.
Modern laurel wreaths are typically circular in shape; however,
ancient laurel wreaths were more of a horseshoe shape.
Traditionally a laurel wreath is made with leaves and branches of
the Bay Laurel, which is a very aromatic evergreen. The laurel
wreath has a rich history and has been a part of Greek mythology,
ancient Olympics, architecture and even academics.
The laurel wreath has symbolized victory and
accomplishment for thousands of years. In ancient Greece the laurel
wreath was presented to winners of not only the Olympic games, but
also all athletic competitions even poetic meets. So the laurel
wreath was really a sign of victory. Romans used this type of
wreath to crown military commanders upon the completion of a
successful and victorious military campaign. In fact, Alfa Romeo's
logo had a laurel wreath added to it after they were crowned
winners in the Automobile World Championship of 1925. Apollo, one
of the most popular gods of Greek mythology, wore a laurel wreath
on his head.
The Beaux-Arts style of architecture was very popular in the U.S.
from 1885-1920. Symmetry is a strong characteristic of this type of
architecture so the laurel wreath lent itself very well to these
symmetrical designs of architecture.
The Empire period of decorative arts in the
early 19th century received a lot of inspiration from ancient
Greece and Rome. The ornamental design and symbols used in this
ancient world can be seen in furniture and textiles and these
designs include the laurel wreath.
The academic world the laurel wreath is often
used as a symbol of a master's degree. Many college buildings
throughout the world have laurel motifs in the decorative
architecture.
The word laurel has come to mean more than a
type of leave or branch. If you've ever heard the say "He/she is
resting on their laurels" it means that they have not necessarily
done anything of note recently, but they continue to feed off their
previous success.
